Part of the plan

While gardening today, I heard this song on my iPod. It brings me back to the time when I was so bereft and angry about the chasm between:

  • how things were; and
  • how I thought they should be

It was a time of stuck-ness, and there’s nothing I hate more than being stuck.

Perhaps you will find this post at a time when it speaks to you. May you find convergence between how things are and how you think they should be.

May we all.

Part of the Plan by Dan Fogelberg
I have these moments all steady and strong
I’m feeling so holy and humble
The next thing I know I’m all worried and weak
And I feel myself starting to crumble

The meanings get lost and the teachings get tossed
And you don’t know what you’re going to do next
You wait for the sun but it never quite comes
Some kind of message comes through to you
Some kind of message comes through
And it says to you…

[Chorus:]
Love when you can
Cry when you have to
Be who you must
That’s a part of the plan

Await your arrival with simple survival
And one day we’ll all understand
One day we’ll all understand
One day we’ll all understand*

I had a woman who gave me her soul
But I wasn’t ready to take it
Her heart was so fragile and heavy to hold
And I was afraid I might break it

Your conscience awakes and you see your mistakes
And you wish someone would buy your confessions
The days miss their mark and the night gets so dark
And some kind of message comes through to you
Some kind of message shoots through
And it says to you…

[Chorus]

There is no Eden or Heavenly gates
That you’re gonna make it to one day
But all of the answers you seek can be found
In the dreams that you dream on the way

* Oh, yes. I do now

  1. Oh Lori. This is perfect — and all of a sudden I remembered that every morning before high school I used to listen to “Same Old Lang Syne” on an 8-track — (and I wasn’t trying to be ironic in the use of it — it honestly was a hand-me-down…)Thank you lady — for your kind, kind grounded heart. I do wish I came to Colorado — perhaps it’ll have to be a destination..xoPam

  2. Aaah, Dan Fogelberg makes me so sad. Especially because he died so young. I was distracted by that before I could get into feeling the song.

  5. I like everything about this except the chorus. I know that kinda defeats the purpose, but that’s the only way I can actually keep my faith– I can’t begin to accept the plan this cruel, and so I choose the random crap explanation. Random crap that comes down like the ton of bricks, and where the only choice we have is how do we deal with it. Big, important, human choice. A never ending series of choices, actually.

  6. Ah the dreams of a little girl, how quickly infertility shatters them. Atleast I got my prince. It just took so damn long to get my little princess.

  7. Yeah, ladies. Soul-reaching songs from a guy who died too early.Mrs Spock — usually I’m the inspiree! Nice to be the inspirer for once.Pam — PLEASE visit. I have a guest room.Busted — I would love to come visit you, too, if you’d like to let me in.

  8. Thanks for sharing – I like the lyrics, and my DH likes Dan Fogelberg, so I’ll have to listen to the song.(via NCLM)

  15. Holy crap, isn’t that realization that things aren’t always going to be what we think they should be one painful experience? Talk about growing the fu** up. Good post, as always!
