Drumroll, please……

My plan was to have posts throughout the week for Round 7 of Lori’s Childhood Trivia. My plan was to read from y’all dozens of examples of One Hit Wonders from the 1970s, hearing from regular commenters and delurking lurkers alike. My plan was to list these other clues:

2. muddy lyrics
3. innocent but not
4. harmony; and finally,
5. my parents must have bit their tongue

My plan was both encouraged and thwarted. Encouraged by several people. Lollipop, Andy, Niobe and Pamela Jeanne came to my sandbox, bringing their memories of songs like One Tin Soldier, Painted Ladies, and Undercover Angel (LOVE that song!). Thanks also to Furrow and Beth for stopping by.

And thwarted by one person, a MAN, the very first male contestant of the game.

But not the first winner from the Lollipop household.

Yes, it was Josh, a/k/a Mr Goldstein, who cracked the code with the classic hit, Afternoon Delight by the Starland Vocal Band. From all the possibilities of One Hit Wonders, how in the world did Josh guess the right one??

For your own trip down memory lane:

And those muddy lyrics I spoke of? You can find them here. They include the murkiest (Started out this morning feeling so polite / I always though a fish could not be caught who wouldn’t bite) and the part that must have caused humongous angst for my parents, who had three teenage girls at the time, every time we set our 45 on ‘repeat’: (and the thought of rubbin’ you is getting so exciting.)

When was the last time YOU had some?

I am the Contributing Editor for Domestic Adoption. As such, I am on the lookout (and requesting your help) in finding blog posts that speak to compassion in this realm, blog posts that show a point of view in the triad with clarity and without rancor.

Thanks to Beth for nominating a post from Flicka, which will be featured in the coming weeks. Please email me any posts that have stuck with you. And if you’d like to submit a guest post, either something you’ve already posted or something new, let me know that, too.

Finally, I refer you to a clever post where Nonlinear Girl juxtaposes a quote of mine with a photo she took (she does these nonlinear posts frequently). I was fortunate enough to meet NG at our BlogHer panel session. You really should also read her IVF rant post.

  1. mmmmmmmmmmmm afternoon delight! It’s been – umm – too long! Damnit! And Holy Smokes Woman! I got TWO nods in 1 post! WAHOOOOO!!!!!

  2. In our house, it was my <>mother<> who bought the album by Starland Vocal Band containing Afternoon Delight and played it ALL THE TIME. It is seared into my memory (and not in a good way)It also featured deservedly obscure songs with unforgettable lyrics like: <>don’t go to Oregon/ it always rains there/it’s not much fun if you’re not a raindeer<> or <>She’s a war surplus baby/ from Salvation’s Army/ she plays tambourine and wants to be a star<> and <>we come on a ship they called the Mayflower/ we come on a ship that sailed the moon/ we come in the age’s most uncertain hour/ and sing an American tune<>.The horror. The horror.

  3. how in the world did he guess that? clever guy. I remember being at the lake as a kid and listening to that song in the summer, with no idea what it was about. but now, every time I hear it I think of a very awkward scene in that show “arrested development” where the guy and his niece are singing that song to karaoke until they realize what it’s about… awk-ward!hmm, last time I had some was yesterday… heheheh.

  7. Despite the fact that I declare my photos to be unrelated to the quotes, I did take that one in SF. Thanks again for letting me use your quip! (and for the link to my cranky post)

  8. Well, your plan may have been thwarted, but I just gave you an award! Go check out my blog for the details.

  9. A classic, but I’m trying to figure out how a toddler from the 70s would know that song! Curious lullaby…

  13. He is a clever man.But I have to tell Niobe, I always get weepy with the Paul Simon version of American Tune. It makes me feel so patriotic when I’m already hormonal.

  15. Ok, I LOVE the products you’ve reviewed. Yoga gear, iPods and Camelbaks, how cool are you guys? Congrats on the launch of the site and good luck!I’ll second the review of that particular Camelbak too. Fill it with icy Gatorade for a long run on a hot day and it doubles as a personal air conditioner.

  19. I love that you’re doing this! Though I can’t say I agree with the comment you left about being a band weanie on Mile High Mamas. I’ve SEEN all those shows and I know what happens at band camp every summer. 🙂
