So says Megan

Megan is my yoga teacher. I’m sure she is quoting a famous yogi. Iyengar, maybe?

“The pose begins the moment you want to get out of it.”

I am trying to apply this as a metaphor for life.

Maybe it means that I am most alive when I’m on the outside edge of my comfort zone…?

“The pose begins the moment you want to get out of it.”

What do you think it means?

  1. Hah. Great photo. I’m sure his pose has begun. I understand that idea. With running sometimes I feel like the work begins at the point I am running further or faster or harder than the last run. There is a certain base that feels comfortable, but when I hit the next zone, that’s when my work begins. Your hubby is sooo flexible.

  2. I tend to agree with you… the growing process lies in us stretching our boundaries, our comfort zones. If everything is cozy & safe, how can we grow? And, as an aside…. my hips hurt just looking at that picture!

  5. I feel bad that I haven’t been commenting lately, but seriously, my poor little brain cells just can’t contribute to intelligent conversation right now! So I’ll just say, “yeah, what they said!”

  6. Beth — me, too! Ow.PMP — hardly Hubby. It must feel great to get to a new zone. Hubby is more of a runner, and her lives for those moments.Luna — that makes perfect sens.AK — very good point about overdoing either intensity or duration. Checking out your blog now…

  7. i agree that living on the edge of our comfort zones is how we grow, but staying in one “pose” or routine for too long limits that growth as well. and…I’ve chosen you to join in a blogger buddy recipe exchange! Check out my blog to find out more about it!

  8. at the risk of oversimplifying, life is easy when it’s easy. but we evolve and grow stronger and wiser as our limits are tested and we push on through. wise woman that megan.

  13. dang it lori. can you just have some sort of schnarky posts like i do? I read each and every blog post and i swear, I’m stumped most of the time. Why is it that you make me speechless?

  14. Ummm, I’m too focused on the photo to say anything else. Dood, how the hell does anyone bend that way?!

  15. Beth, I think they both are right. (1) listen to your body, and (2) try to stay at the edge of the post for just one more breath.AND, probably yes on the torture!

  16. Funny, I just came back from a yoga class an hour ago. She’s always urging us to breathe just a little farther into the pose, but she also says every yoga class is different. That you should never push your body. But I think that’s not contradicting what your teacher says.Otherwise, she’s just trying to torture you.

  23. It’s a great quote. Others have already said it better but to me it means that it when we struggle that we grow the most.

  25. WooooooooooooahhPretty advanced pose…So integral to the position that one assumes is the desire to get out of it.Which I would assume is discomfort. So, it’s about abiding gracefully with discomfort? The question is, when does the pose <>end<>?

  27. Lori – I am sure this picture is my hubbys yoga teacher! Did you poach it from a site called yoga synergy based in sydney (newtown and bondi junction) by any chance?? is his name simon something or other – I am sure he is on a bunch of postcards floating around our house.he he funny hey.About the metaphor – maybe yes sometimes. Maybe sometimes we need to listen to our squirms telling us we way need to get the hell out.but it sounds very zen. (not that I really have any idea what that is). You know, accepting the moment and all, sitting in it.
