  1. I feel complete when I’m just being a mom. I think this is my purpose for now, and I’m good with that. Since as moms we are self-sacrificing, we have the greatest purpose of all – to serve!

  3. Wow, definitely something for me to think about as I drift into dream land this evening…
Off the top of my head, I think Im with Sandy–I feel like I had met goals and found purpose in different things, but I dont think that journey is over by any means…more to come!

  4. Ooh, great question! I love this one.
The feeling of being in sync, in the flow, when I am making art, feels so right, it is clear to me that it’s my purpose. I am excited but calm, focused and absorbed. I feel so lucky! It’s like one of those dreams when you discover a door you never noticed before in your house, and when you open it you are amazed you never noticed it before.
(Well, this is on a good day, of course).
It’s all about the process – I don’t really enjoy showing the work, and I don’t make any money from it, much. But my discovery of this work of was as important as finding someone to love.
A natural progression of this would be to teach it, of course.
That would really be something – I’d like everyone to have this.
(Sorry if I went on a bit! I get carried away with this subject).

  5. Sandy: I love your last line.

Maybe the question should have been: Do you know what your purpose is in this moment? And are you fulfilling it?

A wise teacher once told me that if you are doing dishes and are present while you are doing them, you are fulfilling your life’s purpose. Your comment made me think of this.

  6. What a great question! My purpose keeps changing or evolving. Finding it always seems to stem from working with others. When I began teaching I realized that my purpose was to teach and reach others that way. When I had a child I realized that my purpose was to love and teach my child. Every time I receive a positive reaction to my writing, I know my purpose is to be a storyteller.

I don’t think we have one purpose and I don’t think it stays the same.

  7. Partly. I 100% always knew I wanted to be a mom and I feel incredibly blessed and fulfilled in this role. Yet I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wonder “what else” I should be doing, or rather, will do one day once the little ones are no longer little. I feel like I have a lot of talent – but at what exactly, I’m not sure! I like to think that when the thing I’m meant to do presents itself to me, I’ll know.

  8. That’s a good question – and I’ve had different answers over the years. Right now, LL, I really feel like I’m in flux. I guess that’s what lead me to Buddhism in a way, searching for that purpose. The times when I’m serving as a bridge – communicating with people, creating value in the moment – is when I feel most alive.

  15. I also think that our purpose changes over time…and our biggest clue is how inspired and excited we feel about what we are doing.

Lori, I feel you are on purpose when you blog and write. It’s so wonderful to hear your insights on living from your heart. Thank you for sharing this special gift!

I feel purposeful in my role as a mother, wife, life coach, tarot card reader and writer (newspaper and blogging) and doing yoga & working out.

One of the reasons I love my life so much is because it is made up of all of these things.

    I am very blessed!

  16. I think it’s to comfort others. Mostly with food 🙂 I like taking care of things, taking care of other people, taking care of the house. I think that also spans everything from being a teacher to being a parent to being a wife to being a friend.

  17. I’m not sure about this. I don’t think I have a purpose out there somewhere that I’m supposed to find. It’s not like it’s an object that’s hidden, rather purpose is something that I create. Have I created a purpose, then? Yes, everyday, I try to be better than I was the day before. Guess, I don’t think I’m supposed to do anything in particular. When I try to live that way, things go awry. It can be horribly painful, so I let go of finding a purpose and try to live purposefully.

    I’m not sure I’m making much sense . . . . but, I’ll post anyway. : )

  18. You know what, no. There are little things that I think i have helped/done, with myself and others. But MY purpose, not sure yet. Thats scary too as the clock is a tickin….

  19. I’m loving these. Thanks for answering, peeps.

For me, it’s the old adage, “You teach what you most need to learn.”

My current purpose is to teach about living from the heart.

Living from the head is easy — I’ve been doing it since my very beginning.

But tuning in to my intuition, my compassion, my interconnectedness to others — that is what I am hear to learn, and simultaneously to show others.

Writing about it in this space helps me to live it more. Writing and blogging are part of my purpose at this time.

  25. I think so, yes. For so many years I was torn and felt terribly restless. When I brought Skeeter home, I was overwhelmed with true contentment and peace. It felt so very good.

But, like others, I feel our purposes can change. I look forward to see where it takes me next!

  27. In an overall, general sense, I think my purpose (the purpose of everyone, really) is to contribute to humanity in a way that ideally leaves it better than when we arrived, even in a very small way.

Living that out takes different forms in my life. For now, it is raising my family to be kind, appreciative, and productive. I was rather surprised at how fulfilling I found this, quitting my job in mental health (another way my purpose takes form) to focus on our home. I believe your life is as meaningful as you make it.

  29. Intellectually, I feel you make your purpose and, like you said, to find purpose in everyday things.

Sadly, it is not uncommon for me to feel my life is empty and I have no purpose no matter how full and purposeful it really is – especially in the late evening hours. I believe it is chemicals as I have lots of family members (both sides) who have struggled / lived with varying degrees of depression. When those thought pass through me, I either try to talk myself out of it or just weather the storm.

Right now (after a rare, good night’s sleep) I am feeling good and just enjoying our daughter. She is at a great age right now. So in this moment, my purpose is to be a mom and connect a bit with my fellow infertiles.

  31. Although there are some yens I would go to the ends of the earth to fulfill (like motherhood and writing), I am constantly in flux as to whether what I’m doing is “enough”, or if I should push myself further.

And then that stresses me out, and I push myself to enjoy what I have and what I am doing now.

And so those two opposites are always pushing and pulling against each other.
