Show & Tell: Royal Coil

Alternate title: “You are getting sleeeeeepy.”

I’ve written before about my fascination with mandalas.

Coloring one causes a kind of planned zoning out, and takes me to a meditative place, even if I’m in a room full of family members and we are coloring and chatting together, as we did over Thanksgiving week.

I love this image. It’s purple and it swirls both in and out. It’s symmetrical and orderly, yet infinite. I might make it my Twitter avatar someday. Anyone know how to animate it? Make it rotate?

You can get your own blank copies of mandala designs here to color as you’d like.

See the cool stuff my classmates are showing and telling over at Mel’s Show & Tell.

  1. I really wasn’t familiar with mandalas before. I love them. I’m having an urge to color one now.

I love the colors you picked.

  2. Happy Birthday to You!! Happy Birthday to You!!
    Happy Birthday, Dearest Lori
    Happy Birthday to YOU!!!

XXXXOOOO I’m a little demonstrative, sorry about being late, ack, work really blows my blogging to he11.

  3. I LOVE mandalas. I discovered them one day at a quirky local toy store and picked up a coloring book full of them. I would copy them for my 8th graders and give them to the class to color on days when they were acting crazy. Thanks for the link to free blank ones!

  4. I can make it rotate, but I keep getting the cord on my monitor all tangled up. 😉

  5. Very cool and in my favorite colors!

I like coloring, and having a 3 year old means I get to do a lot of it. But the mandalas are very cool.

  6. Lovely!

Would you also become meditative if you were coloring a picture of Elmo or something? Is it the coloring or the mandala?

  7. I bet Allison could set it in motion. She is a computer goddess.

It’s funny because once you said it, I could see how relaxing colouring would be. And yet I’ve never considered using it as a stress reliever. And then I forget the idea for a while and then you bring it up again and I think to myself, “I should totally do that.” Let’s see if I can start doing it before I forget again.

  8. Very cool! I’ve never heard of mandalas before, but now that I have, I totally think that I need to print some and get to it! Calming my constant “brain chatter” (lol…no, not in that kind of way) is a constant challenge. My brain is just always processing something. Sounds like this might be a perfect outlet for some of that! Thanks so much for sharing!

  9. Oooooooh, that is SO beautiful. It would be a neat picture to have very big in a family room… something to look at and feel grounded.

  10. My Bear would love this! I probably would too…and we would find ourselves coloring in the living room too.

    no techy skills here…sorry

  11. that is beautiful. love the power colors and spirals. I agree, very meditative — for a goddess, that is.

  12. Is it your birthday? For some reason I thought you and me shared …..

Sorry if I missed and many many happy returns.

    Cheers.

I was always a bad colour-er and looked jealously at the girls who could stay in the lines. It brings up too much anxiety. too bad huh. Have to stick with cooking.

  13. CP — LOL!

Sandy — yet another thing we share.

Martha — thank you so much.

QD — yet another thing WE share!

Lolli — maybe in the Spring?

Lin — this does the trick for me. Let me know how it does for you.

BSBS — Good question! Definitely the mandala.

    PFM — TYVM.

Cara — I would love to see what your girls would do with mandalas.

    AYKM — we loves purple!

Kristin — show some of yours!

  14. Oh no, not mandalas again…LOL. Seriously, the last time you mentioned them I not only bookmarked the site you mentioned but I downloaded a whole ton of images. I love that purple image.

  15. I also love mandalas. I never thought of a mandala coloring book!

You could turn it into an animated gif by saving several versions with each one slightly rotated. Then use a graphics program that can create animated gifs. Macromedia Fireworks can, I think, and you can download a free 30 day trial of that. Or just google “making an animated gif” and you’ll find lots of instructions for other softwares and maybe even some free utilities.

  16. That is lovely! I think I will try coloring one of those. I think coloring is so therapeutic even for adults!

  17. And it’s purple! Totally my favorite color for all of it’s variants – from violet to deep burgundies…

  18. This is beautiful! Another purple fan here 😀

I also find coloring to be totally relaxing. I love it! I find myself buying coloring books for my youngest niece and then, somehow, they end up staying at my place 😉

I was going to suggest how to animate the mandala for you, but Furrow beat me to it! I use Paint Shop Pro, but the computer that has the program on it is down at the moment. If I get it fixed in the next few days, I could probably animate it for you.

    Btw, Happy Belated Birthday!

  19. I loved your mandala and the colors you chose.

I came home with some beautifully colored mandalas from the Thanksgiving feast. What a great time!

Coloring mandalas is meditative. I think it might be both the process of coloring and the design that is so soothing.

    Beautiful!

  20. I think the colors are peaceful and calming. Don’t know how to rotate it though- I am no technical wizard…
