Perfect Moment Monday: Leap Day

Perfect Moment Monday is about noticing a perfect moment rather than creating one. Perfect moments can be momentous or ordinary or somewhere in between.

Once a week we engage in mindfulness about something that is right with our world. Everyone is welcome to join. Details on how to participate are at the bottom of this post, complete with bloggy bling.

Please visit the links of the participants at the bottom.

Here’s a perfect moment from my week. I hope you’ll share yours, too.

One of my favorite sayings is Leap and the net will appear.

Of course, it’s meant to be a metaphorical statement. Leaping into unknowns like college, marriage, parenthood, adoptive parenting and other opportunities that come our way. Somehow, we are presented with a net, usually after we leap.

But this week I got the literal meaning.

Late last summer I took my kids to Jungle Quest, a place for kids to swing from vines, zipline across a room, and climb a rock wall. Tessa and Reed looked like they were having so much fun that I decided the next time we went, I would also harness up and fly through the air.

Which was easier said than done. The whole family went this week on the MLK holiday. I had butterflies while the Jungle Quest guy put the harness on me. Even at the lowest platform, I had a very difficult time leaping off.

But I did it. And soon, I liked it.

I don’t know why letting go is so hard sometimes. But doing so often leads to perfect moments.

  1. What a cool perfect moment! And I too really like the meaning(s) behind your “leap and the net is there” quote.

    BTW—I’m loving your multi-colored hoodie! 🙂

  2. Awesome! This (total) chicken will have to try it sometime! Do they serve.. er.. adult bevvies there? ;o)

  3. Wheeeee!

There’s something evolutionarily hard-wired that prevents us from making those leaps. Despite having done a lot of rock climbing and complex ropes courses in my youth, and therefore fully trusting the technology of ropes and pulleys, when I went ziplining a couple of years ago I had to push myself to make each leap. My mind knew that it was safe, but my body didn’t share that trust.

It’s probably not a bad thing for our survival to be naturally cautious about jumping off of tall things.

  4. What a wonderful moment. I have been rappelling and taking that first step off is so damned hard…but it is so much fun!

  5. I love that saying…I may use it! I have always wanted to try the Trapeze school nearby…but I am kinda scared of heights…some day tho…

  6. I love this. Leap and the net is there.
I keep thinking about a similar saying… if you fall, fly. if you’re falling, leap… anyone know it?
I know your net is about faith, Lori. I also like the idea of soaring. Great activity.

  7. You Go, Girlfriend!! You totally Rock!!! High Five and a Fist Bump!! Whoot Hoot!!
Thanks for linking me up, you are so sweet.
I was thinking about your Dh, Rob how is he doing?

  8. Your post reminds me of when we went snorkeling in Cozumel. The guide told us to jump in and when we hesitated he said, “What are you chicken?”

So we showed him and jumped in! Wow was that spectacular!!!

I’m finding that it’s all about pushing my comfort zone just a little…no matter if I’m writing, parenting, doing yoga, running, etc. It keeps me growing.

This past weekend I started to learn how to play the guitar (finger tips are sore) and beaded my first anklet. Not quite as daring as a zipline, but still pushing the boundaries.

    Yeah for you! Perfect!

  9. Thanks, Alana. Husband got it for me for Christmas, and he calls it Lori’s Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

  10. I’m with you – I have a hard time letting go. But I usually end up going juuuust past the point of no return…

  11. You just wanted to wear a harness;-)

But in all seriousness, it sounds like total fun. I’m glad you were able to let go and enjoy with your kiddos.

  12. Weeeee! You have the coolest places to play there.

Even though I think about what I would post every Monday, I actually took the time (at the expense of work . . .shhhhh) to do it this week.

  13. Melissa: yes, in the flask inside my jacket.

    Sheri: I remember that!

Martha: Husband is good! He harnessed up and jumped a few times, and declared it “boring.”

    Adrenalin junkie.

  14. That is the perfect literal translation of a metaphorical statement. And it reminds me of a conversation I had with a mentor of mine, years ago. She worked part-time as a psychologist and had three small kids. She said she used to try to balance everything while walking on a tightrope, afraid to fall. But at some point it got to be too much, so she jumped off and now lets the aspects of her life bounce around in the net. It’s scary at times, but freeing.

  15. That is a PERFECT MOMENT! I am so very impressed with you for swallowing your fear and going for it, and I too love the saying that you applied to this.

  16. Oh my G-d–I am so impressed. Never never never would have been able to jump. And I probably would have peed myself. Ruining the platform for all who came after me.
