Perfect Moment Monday: Drug-bearing sister

My sister is a mule.

Wait. Let me tell the story another way.

My back went out this week, for the first time in my life. I’ve always had a strong, supple back, and in recent years I’ve been improving my posture through yoga.

But at the end of a yoga class this week, something shifted in my erector spinae, mid-back, just left of the spine. It knocked the wind out of me, but I was able to get up, put my shoes on and get to the car and drive home. The pain got worse and worse and I was low on people to call. Roger was out of town on business and my parents were on the other side of the state visiting my sister Sheri.

Tami to the rescue. I called my other sister in a “worried voice” (as her overhearing son described it) and she took care of everything. I was unable to think clearly through the pain, so she calmly contacted my doctor, who prescribed meds over the phone, thankfully. As I paced the floor like a land shark — only movement kept the pain somewhat at bay — she fetched the Vic.odin from the pharmacy. When she arrived with the goods I couldn’t get a double dose into my mouth fast enough.

Accompanying her were my nephew, Dominic (5),  who handed me a bag of Mint Milanos, and his friend Kayah, who presented me with a giant get-well balloon.

The love and relief I felt was a perfect moment, matched only by the oblivion that kicked in an hour later. But what’s the fun in writing about being unconscious?

Tami then picked up my children at school and cared for them until bedtime, helping with homework, feeding and bathing them, returning them home and getting them in bed. By morning the next day, I was able to function again.

I’m counting my blessings today. And Tami is at the top of the list.

  4. Oh goodness!! Hope your back is feeling better!  Awesome your sister came through!  <3  and for Milanos!  Those are like gold in my house!  Love what you’ve done “around here”.  🙂   I hadn’t been around while on break!

  5. So glad you had such a great person to call!  When we’re sick/hurt, a drug mule sister sounds perfect!

I hope your pain is gone very soon.

  6. I didn’t realize this had happened when we talked last night. I’m so sorry.

Tami IS a great sister — very giving, thoughtful and strong! She seems to think of things to make it better that wouldn’t even cross my mind.  I’m so glad she was there to help you.

I hope you are feeling better and back to your yoga routine soon!

  7. I am. The doc said I’d be in pain for a couple of days, but I was feeling better after only one.

    Whew!

  8. So glad Tami was able to rescue you!  Hope you’re feeling better by now!

  9. What an amazing sister you have. I’m so glad you have family close by who you can count on. So sweet that the kids brought you candy and balloons too! I hope you’re feeling better…

P.S. Love the new blog design!

  10. Oh no lori! Thank goodness she was there for the rescue. Back pain if just the worst. I hope you are feeling better for the count.

  11. Man, all my sisters do is tell me how big my butt is!  I wish I had drug mules…

(Kidding – my sisters would totally bring me drugs if they didn’t live many hours away.  But your sisters sound very sweet!)

Hope you’re “back” to normal soon!

  12. To finish the story, Lori turned around and saved ME this week. My husband and I were sick for DAYS and our 5 year old had the worst cabin fever. Aunt Lori to the rescue! She whisked away my son, fed and entertained him for the night, returned him tired and ready for bed.

Nothing like sisters. wish I had more of them in town!

Love you both more than you love me!

  13. We enjoyed having your son almost as much as I enjoyed having the drugs!

    Kidding. He was much better.

    I have the same wish!
