Perfect Moment Monday: Stubborn gets a new name

Perfect Moment Monday is about noticing a perfect moment rather than creating one. Perfect moments can be momentous or ordinary or somewhere in between.

Once a week we engage in mindfulness about something that is right with our world. Everyone is welcome to join. Details on how to participate are at the bottom of this post, complete with bloggy bling.

Please visit the links of the participants at the bottom.

Here’s a perfect moment from my week. I hope you’ll share yours, too.

====================================

The second graders were squirming in the gym. About half of them had been given their awards at the end-of-year ceremony, each one based on a character out of the Core Knowledge curriculum that had been studied this past school year.

We applauded Betsy Ross, Queen Hatshepsut, Sacagawea, and the girls who demonstrated their traits. We cheered for George Washington, Daniel Boone, and Aristotle, as well as the boys who embodied their virtues.

One second-grader in particular was REALLY squirming, as was her mom. Would she get an award? Would it be a good one? Might the teachers skip her name? Might she be embarrassed in front of all her friends?

Finally, after most of the other 62 children had made their trip to and from the stage, Tessa was invited up. She beamed and radiated pride as she was presented this award for “determination and never-give-up spirit.”

Both mother and daughter were very pleased with this outcome. It was very appropriate, and very honorable.

Next time she digs in her heels, I’ll just call her “Rosa.”

  2. I LOVE that Tessa’s school does this! What a great reminder to look at those traits that we don’t always love in our children in a positive light!

  3. Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha! That reminds me of the tone of voice people use when they tell me I’m honest! (like that’s a horrible character trait or something)

Good for Tessa! She’ll need determination and tenacity in life!

  5. I can just see Tessa/Rosa standing up front waiting to get the award. And what a PERFECT award for her.

    Go Tessa! Go Rosa!

    Perfect!

  6. Right on, Rosa!
Determination .. never-give-up spirit … and bravery. Let Tessa know that another thing she and Rosa have in common is bravery. It’s not easy to stick to your guns.
I love how these kids spent the weekend carrying around a kind of shadow self … very cool.

  7. Yea, Tessa! I can only imagine how proud you were. That is a very honorable award and I know she lives up to it.

  8. it does seem rather appropriate. and I’d wager to say it’s a quality that will help her get what she wants and needs, always. go tessa weeble, er, parks!

  9. Every girl/woman needs a little Determination…some GUMPTION.
So glad your little girl has already found her.
