Perfect Moment Monday: Like mothers, like daughters

Perfect Moment Monday is about noticing a perfect moment rather than creating one. Perfect moments can be momentous or ordinary or somewhere in between.

Once a week we engage in mindfulness about something that is right with our world. Everyone is welcome to join. Details on how to participate are at the bottom of this post, complete with bloggy bling.

Please visit the links of the participants at the bottom.

Here’s a perfect moment from my week. I hope you’ll share yours, too.

====================================

In my days as a yuppie (don’t hate me, it was the fashion for single women then), I became friends with another driven and passionate woman named Elektra. We were brought together through our work at an educational establishment.

We were both swimming the dating waters. She comforted me when Perry broke my heart. I supported her as she painfully broke up with John.

Then I met Roger and swooned. She soon met Rob and they swooned. Roger and I married and moved to Syria. Elektra and Rob married and moved to Benin. We finally all settled in Denver and began the talk about building our families.

Ten years ago, Elektra and I sat in the sunroom of my old Victorian home and spoke longingly about our hoped-for next stage of life: to have children and to raise them as the closest of friends.

Soon thereafter, Rob announced their pregnancy, news that coincided with Roger and me receiving bad news regarding our likelihood of becoming parents.

But we continued the streak of parallel lives. Roger and I became parents right before their son was born (happy birthday, Tiger!). We WOULD be able to raise our children together, right?

Wrong. While Tiger was still an infant, Rob was transferred to another part of the country. Where they would remain for years and years. During this time Reed joined our family and Elektra and Rob had a daughter, Ana.

In the  summer of 2010 the stars aligned for my friend and her family to move back to Colorado. FINALLY we are raising our children together.

Here are our daughters, sharing clothes and secrets and fears and hopes, just like their mothers do — and may do so until they wear matching red and purple hats.

Elektra, I’m so glad to have you nearby.  May we have even more perfect moments ahead of us than we do behind us.

  1. How fun that must be! So glad you were reunited!

(and now I have that song running through my head…why does your every post put a song in my head? Peaches and Herb…really?)

  2. Oh Lori, I truly truly LOVED that perfect moment, and that picture, it’s like a HALLMARK card. Old Friendships are the best…thanks for sharing with us.

  3. How cute! And, your apology for being a yuppie…*giggle*

It’s my 3rd 14’er. But they feel like the first every time since I don’t train for them!

  4. what a great perfect moment. There are some friends that move and shift in and out of our lives, and that distance becomes nothing when you are back together again. I am so happy this shift brings you together again, where you hoped you would be.

    And that picture – wonderful.

  5. What a sweet, sweet photo! And a great story to go with it. I keep meaning to come on here to say what a perfect moment it was for ME to open up a recent issue of Parents magazine to see your blog listed as a ‘must read’ mommy blog. I felt like jumping up and down! How wonderful, and well-deserved. I’ve been reading for years and you always make me smile.

  6. Reunited and it feels so good
    Reunited ’cause we understood
    There’s one perfect fit
And, sugar, this one is it
    We both are so excited
    ‘Cause we’re reunited, hey, hey

I absolutely LOVE that picture and I’m so happy you are getting to experience this. One of my dearest friends may be moving close by and I’m so excited.

  7. I’m so jealous! There are a few close friends I would love to live close by to, but life is pushing us in different directions. Enjoy all the memories they form.

  8. However appropriately or inappropriately we may attire ourselves in our old age (to the disgust of our daughters!) our friendship will always be classic. Thanks for the heart-felt post; you gave me more than a perfect moment for my Monday.
