Perfect Moment Monday: The Giggler

You’ve heard of The Riddler and The Joker?

This is my son, The Giggler, during an after-school game of Tickle Weed (which Reed made up years ago:  “No, Mommy, don’t tickle me! Don’t eat my tummy!”).

Quite the pick-me-up, no?

Perfect Moment Monday: Love and warriors

As I opened my hips, I watched the woman next to me do so as well.

We both settled into our Warrior IIs. At the instructor’s urging, we moved our front knees toward our pinkie toes, stretched our arms from fingertip to fingertip and sank even further into our front legs. We aimed to square our hips to the side wall. We held the pose until our quads burned.

I admired the woman on the mat next to me. She was a generation ahead of me, in her 70s. She looked limber but relatively new to yoga. Still, she was focused on getting to her edge in the pose. She was breathing deeply and deliberately, like you’re supposed to do. She was fully present on her mat.

Just as she’s been present for me my whole life. She’s my mom. She’s doing yoga with me these days.

In that moment, I realized how lucky I am to have my mom, this amazing woman, in my life every day. My heart swelled in my Warrior II as I love and gratitude for being blessed with My Mom washed over me.

It nearly became one of those upwelling moments but I swallowed it down just as the instructor took us back to runner’s lunge. Crisis averted.

Perfect Moment Monday: Nia grrlz

I was a slug for most of my life. It’s only in the last 5 years that I’ve begun moving my body, practicing yoga, going to the gym, trying new activities. What kept me from doing more? Besides general laziness, I suffered from a horrible case of self-consciousness from a very young age.

One of the best things about being my my 40s is that I care less what other people think. For one thing, I am no longer so self- absorbed to think that all eyes at the gym are on ME. For another, I gradually have  begun to value my own opinions over those of others, especially strangers.

This has opened up new worlds for me. Since this time last year, I’ve taken up Turbo-Kickboxing, Zumba, HipHop dancing and my latest find, Nia.

Nia stands for both Non-Impact Aerobics and Neuromuscular-Integrative Action. I enjoy it because it’s expansive and flowing and it’s done to world music. It’s a fusion of thee each of the dance arts (jazz, modern, Duncan), the healing arts (Yoga, Feldenkrais and Alexander movement techniques) and the martial arts (Tae Kwan Do, Tai Chi, and Aikido).

Most appealing for me is that Nia is much less about doing it right than about simply moving your body joyously. I do feel happy in my body after taking a class.

Which I now do weekly.

Last week I got something even better than a Nia class. I got a Nia class with sisters! Both Sheri and Tami Nia-ed with me. I was euphoric to see in the mirror my two athletic sisters and me with them, three graces.

Perfect moment in triplicate.
