Wobbling for Daisy

in Blogging

I’m participating in Time Warp Tuesday, the monthly bloghop offered by Kathy at Four of a Kind. This week’s theme is Blog Beginnings, and our assignment asks us to:

Share with us your first blog entry or one of the first posts that you wrote.

Seven hundred ninety-nine posts ago (this one is #800) I  birthed W€€blesWobblog, this blog’s previous incarnation, with a very short post called Blogging for the Sake of a Book.

You see, in the Spring of 2007 I read a book by Peggy Orenstein called Waiting for Daisy. I was so enthralled with it that I did what any self-respecting bookworm does, I googled it. I landed on a blog (what’s a blog?? I’d heard of them but never read one)  in which this really nice-sounding lady said  she was hosting a Waiting for Daisy book tour and all I needed to participate was the book and a blog.

A book and a blog? I already had the former. I saw in the upper corner of that lady’s post the words, “Create Blog.”

So I did. For a month I wrote posts that received no comments, and then the book tour happened. All of a sudden I had a tribe.

It was a beautiful thing.

I will be forever grateful to Peggy, Daisy and Melissa.

Click over to Time Warp Tuesday to read more first posts and maybe even add your own.

This post is also a participant in the Finish the Sentence bloghop, “I blog because” edition. More on FindingNinee.

This is such a fascinating Time Warp Topic. Everybody has come to blogging in such different ways, and somehow, luckily, we’ve all found each other.

“Nice sounding lady” sounds like a euphemism for “a person who carries a pocket book.” As opposed to a purse.

Lavender Luz February 21, 2012 at 2:36 pm

Who knew that the nice-sounding lady with a pocket book would become such a force in my life??

Congrats on your 800th post and coming up on 5 years of blogging Lori! :)

Reading your Time Warp Post today made me feel all warm and fuzzy.

I love the story of what brought you to blogging! That is awesome that you Googled a book that really spoke to you and then ended up on our Stirrup Queen’s doorstep. I also appreciate how you started your blog so you could participate in the book tour she was hosting and that it led to your friendship with Mel. As an aside, now I want to read Waiting for Daisy. :)

I didn’t “find” Mel until someone submitted one of my failed IVF cycles to the LFCA and I wondered where these “random” commenters were coming from on my blog. Someone finally mentioned that was how they had gotten to me and I clicked over to see what they were talking about. I was amazed at the world that opened up to me, as so many of us are when we find our way into the ALI Community here in the blogosphere.

As I shared a little while ago in my comment on your 1st post from May 2007 and have told you at least a few times over the past year or so, I wish that we had found each other sooner. I wish I had participated in a book tour before I finally did with Eat, Pray, Love in August 2008. Though even then, as we recently discovered, our paths crossed and we briefly interacted, it took us until you hosted the book tour for Mel’s Life From Scratch for, as you put it so nicely, us to “stick.”

I am grateful that you started this blog almost 5 years ago and for all that you are and have been to others in our ALI Community since. Thank you for your support of my Time Warp Tuesday blog hop/writing exercise today and since I started this last September. Thank you for your support and encouragement in general since we entered each other orbits (another one of my favorite ways that you described our getting to know each other this past year)!

Lori, you challenge me (in a wonderful way) to be a better and more mindful person and writer.

That is also a beautiful thing.

I will be forever grateful to and for you. xoxo

800 posts! You have had a lot to say – that’s pretty amazing!

I love the “nice-sounding lady” discourse above…

Kristin February 21, 2012 at 8:36 pm

Congrats on 800 posts and 5 years (almost). I’m glad you stumble across that nice sounding lady and started your blog because I wouldn’t have found you without that.

CONGRATS!! Huge milestone :) I’m so happy you met “that nice-sounding lady”. Ahem: that guitar-playing, bestselling novel writing, skateboard-riding, Green Day-loving totally rad woman :) She’s a life changer, in the best of ways!

“Waiting for Daisy” was the only book I could find, back in my infertility treatment days, that made any sense to me at all. This was before Mel’s book. I still love that book, a lot. Bodega Bliss currently has my copy…

I am so happy you started writing and are still writing today. You make my world better :)

Congratulations on your 800th post! What a great reason to start a blog.

I must not be a self respecting bookworm…I’ll freely admit I never thought to google. But now I’ll have to!

What a neat story! And you started such a long road just from reading a book. I love it!

Baby Smiling In Back Seat February 22, 2012 at 8:33 pm

I think “nice-sounding lady” means that she may sound nice, but watch out.

Baby Smiling In Back Seat February 22, 2012 at 10:00 pm

Oh, and a very happy #800!

Esperanza February 22, 2012 at 10:22 pm

800 posts! THAT IS AMAZING! I wonder where I’ll be when I’ve written 800 posts. Hopefully I’ll remember to contact you that day so we can reminisce about this comment, right here.

I also can’t believe you’ve been writing for five years. Do you ever look back through your archives? Sometimes I get wistful and read posts that I published one and two years ago. I can’t imagine being able to go back five years. I’m sure some day I’ll be able to. I can’t imagine shutting my blog down anytime in the next 2.5 years.

Here’s to the last five years and to AT LEAST five more!

Kate February 23, 2012 at 7:39 am

800 posts, holy moly, good for you! Isn’t it interesting to look back and see how one different choice could have changed Everything?
Alas, your booktour link was broken for me– but I’ll check back!

“That nice-sounding lady” & her book club were two major reasons why I started my blog too, 4+ years & 600ish posts ago. ; ) Congratulations on reaching 800!! That’s amazing.

So amazing and wonderful how things work out…and now you’ll have a BOOK!

Janine Huldie May 24, 2013 at 9:15 am

Wonderful reason for starting your blog and so happy to get to know you a bit better with today linkup. Thank you so very much for joining us at Finish the Sentence Friday, today and hope you will join us again in the future!! :)

Surprise Mama May 24, 2013 at 11:20 am

What a cool “first” story. It really is so amazing how things work out. I certainly do think that everything happens for a reason…now I want to go read that book that inspired you!

Stephanie Sprenger May 24, 2013 at 1:47 pm

Hooray! You linked up with FTSF! What a treat to see you in the linkup! I love reading about how everyone’s blog began. And for the record, I adore Peggy Orenstein. Her writing, at least, having never met her myself… :)

Lori, Lori, Lori.
You might just be my new blog hero. While I have always admired you in real life, and have only recently reconnected with you in this blog place (how awesome is that – that blogs do that for us), I am a little jealous that you found the blogspace so much sooner than I did. It truly is an amazing platform to share and find community. You rock. Huge. And? OMG HAPPY birthday to 800 posts! Holy cow wow.
Huge <3
