Perfect Moment Monday: Swimmingly

Perfect Moment Monday is about noticing a perfect moment rather than creating one. Perfect moments can be momentous or ordinary or somewhere in between.

Once a week we engage in mindfulness about something that is right with our world. Everyone is welcome to join. Details on how to participate are at the bottom of this post, complete with bloggy bling.

Please visit the links of the participants at the bottom.

Here’s a perfect moment from my week. I hope you’ll share yours, too.

This summer Tessa’s participating in an organized sport for the first time — swim team. She’s at the pool every weekday morning of summer break by 8 am, and warming up for meets on Saturday mornings by 7 am. No word (none that I can place on a family blog, anyway) on what child, brother, mother or father think about these early and numerous commitments during vacation.

Tessa had her first competitive meet this weekend at an “away” pool north of us about a 40 minute drive. Which means she was up and out the door around 6 am on a Saturday. She was very nervous and did not really know what to expect. She had a whole flock of butterflies swarming in her tummy.

She also had her own cheering section. Grandma and Grandpa made the drive, as did Aunt Sheri and Aunt Tami. Plus, of course, Daddy and Mommy and Reed.

We told her that just getting to the starting line would make her a winner, and that making it to the finish line would be fabulous, too. She lined up for her heat about 2.5 hours after warm-ups and when the horn sounded she jumped in and swam, freestyle to the other end of the lane — halfway done. She stopped long enough to smile at us and the headed back to the starting/finish line.

Which she crossed. Butterflies were vanquished.

Until next week, anyway.

We are perfectly proud of our swimmer-girl.

  1. That is so awesome!
She is not only showing up but she is defining herself. Tessa is a SWIMMER.

I hope you fill her sports bag with little packs of honey. She needs that instant energy. You’ll have to show her how to shave every hair off her body… but that’s for later.

But for now. Get a poster of Dara Torres for her bedroom wall.
    She can relate.

  2. Lori,

My fondest memories still as an adult are of the many sporting events I participated in growing up. there was nothing like looking into the stands and finding either my mother or father sitting there cheering. And with four of us kids, you can imagine the juggling it took.

I still have friends come up to me years later and ask about my parents because they were always there, cheering for all my teammates, not just me. I don’t know how they did it all those years, but it showed me that my parents would always be there for me no matter what!

  3. What discipline for a child!

I know I’m not playing along right, but I did write up a new post and thought of you and your perfect moment posts while I was writing it.
