On Your Radar: Adoption Happenings in June

1. Newsweek Article

Stories from birth mom have never been as visible and oft-told as stories from adoptive moms. So it was refreshing to see an article by Candace Cahill in Newsweek magazine.

Candace Cahill in Newsweek

Candace is the author of the upcoming memoir Goodbye Again, which I can wholeheartedly vouch for, having been invited as an early reader. Visit Candace on her site to be notified when her memoir is available in November, just in time for National Adoption Awareness Month.

For now, hear more of Candace’s story in Ep 204 of Adoption: The Long View.

2. The Intersection of Adoption and Healthcare

What role does healthcare play in keeping adoption as a safe choice* for expectant moms and prospective adoptive parents? The Heart-to-Heart podcast interviewed Rebecca Vahle of the Family to Family Support Network about how communities can better care for unique families (such as those entering into adoption) in a hospital setting and beyond.

Disclosure: I’ve long been a proponent of Rebecca’s work, serving on the board of the Family to Family Support Network, advocating on Capitol Hill, and now being on staff.

* If you don’t know what I mean by “safe choice,” see this recent USA Today article, which is behind a paywall.

3. Spotlight Series: The Queen’s Gambit

Through the summer, Adoption Network Cleveland is hosting virtual discussions around adoption, foster care, and kinship care, using various entertainment media as a jumping-off points.

Up first on June 21 is a spotlight on The Queen’s Gambit.

Later in the summer, What I Carry by Jennifer Longo is in the spotlight for July, and the podcast series “The Adopted Life” will be spotlighted in August. Events are free and registration is required.

4. Three Sides to Every Adoption: Abortion & Attachment (two different episodes!)

In our tri-part conversations, this past month Sara, Kelsey and I dived into two important topics.

First and super timely is a conversation about abortion as it relates to adoption. Like so many, maybe you are watching and waiting for the Supreme Court’s ruling on Roe v Wade, expected any day now.

Our conversation, which goes beyond pro-this or anti-that, has been on toughest topic we’ve covered yet in this series, and if you look at the other contentious topics we’ve addressed, that’s saying something.

Sara, Kelsey, and I present Adoption and the Abortion Debate.

In addition, we had the supreme pleasure to interview Dr Gordon Neufeld of the Neufeld Institute about Separation, Trauma, and Healing in Adoption. If you are an adoptee or if you love an adoptee, or if you are a human or if you love a human, you’ll find something helpful and validating in this evergreen episode.

    1. Thank you for the courage of telling your story, Candace. I foresee it de-mystifying the birth parent experience in Adoption Land as it lands on more and more people’s reading lists.
